This overmantel mirror comes from a suite of furniture exhibited in the Carrington Pavilion of the Centennial International Exhibition held in Melbourne in 1888; catalogue no. 323 Wallach Bros., York Street Wynyard Square and Clarence Street Sydney. -Gothic Furniture for a complete bedroom, diningroom, library, parlour. It was also the subject of an article in the Sydney Mail 16th June 1888, where this mirror was singled out for praise: The Overmantel will, without doubt, receive a large amount of admiration. The decorative work includes representations of the four principal Australian colonies, typified respectively by Goddesses of Commerce, Manufactures, the Pastoral Industry and Agriculture. It was later acquired by W.S.Tait and installed in his Drummoyne house Liryclea where it was sold in the house contents auction in 1923 held by Strongman and Watkin of Burwood
