Lot Essay

French versions of this practical type of hinged top and pivot-legged table are discussed in N. de Reynies, Le Mobilier domestique, Paris 1987, vol. II, p. 300. This polygonal table-top, painted in the picturesque manner and celebrating love's triumph, depicts Cupid with Venus's shell-badge in a landscaped vignette wreathed with flowers.
