Lot Essay

The antique sarcophagus-scrolled commode is serpentined and ormolu-enriched in the French 'picturesque' manner, while its ribbon-banded top is parquetried in a Roman-mosaic with two lozenged compartments. The commode belongs to a group that has been attributed to the Marlborough cabinet-maker Henry Hill (d. 1778) together with a related, but larger, commode formerly in the Samuel Messer collection (L. Wood, The Lady Lever Art Gallery; Catalogue of Commodes, London, 1994, No.4, p. 73, fig. 61 and p.71, fig. 56).
