John Kendell appears to have been active in Leeds as early as 1783, in 1792 the business was described as 'timber merchant and cabinet maker' and in 1816 became known as John Kendell & Co. They were employed by the Earl of Harewood at Harewood House, Leeds between 1818-22, and at Farnley Hall, Otley between 1833-34 and adopted a policy of labelling their furniture from the 1830's. The firm wa taken over by Marsh and Jones in 1863. See The Dictionary of English Furniture-Makers 1660 - 1840, Leeds, 1986.
