Lot Essay

The plinth-based commode with Etruscan lion-mask handles is flanked by pilasters with eagle-inhabited capitals derived from C. Percier and P.F.L. Fontaine's Napoleonic schemes in their Receuil de Décorations Intérieures, 1801. A related commode with these pilasters, surmounting lion-paw feet was sold Sotheby's Monaco, 7 December 1983, lot 1817.

A related lion-footed 'commode antique' was illustrated in La Mésangêre's Meubles et Objets de Goût, 1802, pl. 49
