Of large porportions, with three classically-dressed bacchantes headed by a foliate-cast dish hung with palmettes, issuing scrolled foliate branches with drip-pans and nozzles, surmounted by a pierced basket tied with a fruiting vine wreath, above a concave-sided tripod base with floral swags and musical instruments, on palmette-headed paw feet, signed 'THOMIRE A PARIS', one bacchante originally holding further elements, hanging palmettes to dish later

The present candelabra is virtually identical to an example by Pierre-Philippe Thomire (maître-fondeur in 1772) dated 1810-14, based on a design of the three graces attributed to Pierre Cartellier (1757-1831) and illustrated in H. Ottomeyer, P. Pröschel, et al., Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, vol. I, p.382, fig. 5.16.2). Commissioned for Napoléon's brother, Prince Lucien Bonaparte, it is now in the collection of the Musée Marmottan, Paris and is illustrated in M. Deschamps, 'Empire', 1994, p.169.
