Lot Essay

The overall form and the foliate carving on the barrel of this cannon are directly comparable to another cannon, signed and dated by Michael Schödelook, 1660 (see illustration). Schödelook is known to have been active in Danzig in the third quarter of the 17th Century, and to have executed at least one other cannon in amber, formerly in the Berlin Schlossmuseum and now presumed destroyed (Trusted, op. cit., p. 808). The present example has been substantially altered from its original form; the enamelled mounts set with rubies and diamonds, for example, are an additon of the late 19th Century, and were probably designed by Reinhold Vasters.
