AN ENGLISH BROADSWORD WITH 'MORTUARY' HILT
Mid-17th Century
With very broad blade fullered at the forte and struck thrice on each face with a crescent moon mark, the iron hilt comprising basket guard of characteristic form with solid hand-guard, and merging with a knuckle-guard flanked by two vertical side-bars and two scrolls, ovoidal pommel with button (the latter damaged), and later leather- covered wire-bound grip, the guard finely pierced and chiselled in relief with scrollwork framing masks, figures of mermaids and two cartouches with profile heads, the pommel chiselled with masks (pitted and rust-damaged throughout)
