AN ENGLISH SILVER-HILTED SMALL-SWORD
London silver hallmarks for 1762
With colichemarde blade of hollow triangular section etched at the forte with panel of scrolls and strapwork (rubbed), the hilt cast, chased and pierced with rococo scrollwork framing trophies of arms, tridents, dragons and bearded human heads, and accompanied by strips of nailhead ornament, the wooden grip bound with silver wire and ribbon, the latter gilt, in original leather scabbard (damaged) with silver mounts chased with rococo foliage, the mouth-locket inscribed 'Loxhams Royal Exchange', and with pierced frog-hook, silversmith's mark John Radborn

Lot Essay

John Radborn (d. 1780), a very gifted silver hilt maker, became free of the London Cutler's Company in 1745, and registered his first recorded mark at Goldsmiths' Hall in 1762. The eminent London firm of cutlers Loxham's is recorded in the Royal Exchange from 1728 to 1803
