Lot Essay

This model was awarded Bronze Medal ME Exhibition London 1983

Designated CL8, the U.S.S. 'Detroit' was one of ten "Omaha" class light cruisers ordered during the Great War even though none were actually begun until the War had ended. Displacing 9,508 tons fully loaded, they measured 555½ feet in length with a 55½ foot beam nnd mounted 16 x 6in. guns as their main armament. Powered by Westinghouse turbines fired from eight Yarrow boilers, the "Omaha's" could make 34knots at full steam but were considered rather cramped for a complement of 458 men especially when new weaponry was installed prior to the Second World War.

'Detroit' herself was ordered from the Fore River Yard and laid down on 10 November 1920. Launched on 29 June 1922, she was completed on 31 July the following year and commissioned shortly afterwards. The outbreak of the Second World War found her lying at Pearl Harbour but she escaped damage when the Japanese attacked the base there on 7 December 1941. Thereafter continuously in action across the Pacific, she was retired after peace came in 1945 and broken up in 1946
