Star rubies have long been the province of only the most sophisticated collectors. They search for the seemingly unattainable combination of a well defined star, together with a rich red body colour and a transparent crystal. The rutile inclusions which create the effect of asterism, also appear as white silk within the stone, diluting the body colour while making the crystal opaque. Thus many rubies with strong stars tend to be pinkish and not very transparent. However, this Burmese star ruby shows the extraordinary balance of a rich body colour, strong well defined star and near flawlessness. Additionally, it is over 10 carats, making it among the most rare and desirable of gemstones.
With certificate 29774 from the SSEF dated 13/1/97 stating that the star ruby is of Burmese (Myanmar) origin with no indications of thermal treatment, with distinct asterism
and
Certificate 9612120 dated 23/12/96 from the Gübelin Gemmological Laboratory stating that the star ruby is, in their opinion, of Burmese (Myanmar) origin , with no indications of thermal treatment
accompanied by a letter stating:
The 11.88 ct star ruby described in the above mentioned report, displays a sharp and well-centred asterism, combined with a saturated and homogenous colour. In addition, this gemstone possesse a degree of transparency which is unusual for a star ruby of this size and with this quality of asterism.
Such a combination of attributes in a star ruby exceeding 10 ct is rare.
