Bishu Shanzhuang, the Palace for the Retreat from Summer Heat is situated in Jehol (present day Chengde).
A group of boxes to which this example belongs, mentions the auspicious wufu. Boxes of this type may have been made in commemoration of Qianlong's 80th birthday, or at least in celebration of Qianlong's birthday during the latter part of his life. One such example is a rectangular box of cloisonné enamel, inscribed with the Xiangyong Wufu, 'The Enjoyment of the Five Blessings', included in the exhibition, Qing Legacy: the Art of Imperial Packaging of Qing Dynasty, Macau, 2001, p. 77, no. 9. The Five Blessings or Wufu are listed as: longevity, wealth, health, virtue and to finish one's allotted life span.
The additional term wudai, or Five Generations, is in reference to longevity. Qianlong was particularly proud of being able to see all five generations of his off-springs in his lifetime; such remarkable feat was rarely achieved according to Imperial archivists, Pang Yuanrui and Cao Wentian, as recorded on an Imperial jade book, sold in these Rooms, 30 April 2000, lot 571.
