The inscription on the underside of the brocade box cover reads: 'wrist rest carved by Zhan Cheng of Song dynasty.'
Zhan Cheng was a renowned carpenter and carver active during the Song Gaozong reign (1107-1187). His ingenious artistry earned him the status of the progenitor of Chinese bamboo carving. There is also a style in Chinese furniture known as the Zhan-style that has been attributed to him, which is characterized by its simple form and fine craftsmanship. Weng Fanggang (1733-1818) was a Qing dynasty scholar-official, calligrapher and epigraphist. He obtained the degree of jinshi after passing the highest level of the Civil Service Examination in 1752, and later served as a secretary at the Grand Secretariat. He was important in promoting the study of epigraphy during the Qianlong period.
