This table brings to mind baroque serving tables supported by kneeling blackamoors made in 17th century Venice. However in place of a subservient figure struggling to support the table above is a young triton, posed to spring forward in attack. The figure himself can be attributed to the Milanese sculpture Ludovico Pogliaghi, who created a similar table with a kneeling river God supporting a silver tray, sold property from the Palazzo of a Milanese Noble Family, Christie’s, London, 19 March 2009, lot 83.
