Lot Essay

This scagliola table top is related to a group of tops with pastoral landscape scenes within various geometric borders, usually with black ground (A.M. Massinelli, Scagliola l'Arte della Pietra di Luna, Rome, 1993, pp. 68 and 70 - 72). Although little seems recorded about D. Magnani, a circular top with the Rape of the Sabines after Valerio Castello and within a green simulated marble border, is signed and dated D. Magnani 1827 (Massinelli, idem., p. 74).
