Lot Essay

Another drawing of this composition, in black chalk, pen and brown ink, but without watercolour, is in the Goethe Collection at Weimar (M. Oppel, 1991, no. 43). Margarete Oppel tentatively identifies the view as the Park of the Villa Aldobrandini at Frascati.
