Composed of 5 suras, Arabic manuscript on paper, 78ff. plus 3 fly-leaves, each folio with 7ll. of strong naskh in alternating black and gold, text panels within blue and gold rules, verse roundels in gold and polychrome, sura headings in white on gold cartouches within panels of gold and polychrome illumination, opening folio with similarly illuminated headpiece, some rubbed owner's seal impressions, and few folios with some staining, in original brown morocco with flap decorated with stamped gilt central panel, the doublures with gilt decoupé decoration forming cartouches on red, blue, green and black ground

Lot Essay

This manuscript is composed of a collection of five suras that all begin with the word al-hamd. They include, Qur'an I, Sura al-Fatiha, Qur'an VI, Sura al-An'am, Qur'an XVIII, Sura al-Kahf, Qur'an XXXIV, Sura al-Saba, and Qur'an XXXV, Sura al-Fatir.

Another copy of the Five Suras, dated circa 1350-1420 AD, is lot 25 of the present sale.
