The purpose of this piece is unclear. The holes around the rim are probably original and were either for suspension or for attachment to another larger item. The relatively unfinished nature of the underside would indicate the latter option to be the case. It is however too thin and with too protruding an edge to be a horse trapping. It is possible it was made to fit in the centre of silver, base metal or even wooden bowl. Unfortunately nothing of this type has been published.

The silver-gilt repoussée motifs on this piece can be compared to plaques used as trappings on Ottoman saddlecloths of the 17th century. Three such saddlecloths are in the "Türkenbeute" in Karlsruhe (Badisches Landesmuseum, Karlsruhe: Die Karlsruher Türkenbeute, Munich, 1991, pp. 103-107, nos. 32-34). The floral decoration of two of them (nos. 32 and 33) is comparable to ours in its naturalistic character. The detailing on our piece is, however, finer.
