Tiles painted in black under a plain green glaze are extremely rare. A set of four tiles using this technique are in the Khalili Collection (Rogers, J.M.: Empire of the Sultans, Geneva and London, 1995, no.131, pp.194-5). Those particular tiles re-use a cartoon that had previously been used for the redecoration of the Dome of the Rock, Jerusalem. The present tile is of a design which occurrs in other colour schemes on the Dome of the Rock.
