The ferocious lion with head turned sharply to the side and mouth open in a threatening roar as it clambers atop multi-colored outcroppings of rocks from which sprout orangy red peonies, the lion's body in cloisonné enamel of rich blue tone with white star-like markings, its brows, mane and tail as well as the rocks and peonies all in champlevé enamel

Lot Essay

Star-like markings similar to those on this unusual figure can also be seen on a figure of a recumbent deer in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, which was included in the Oriental Ceramic Society exhibition, The Arts of the Ming Dynasty, London, 1958, no. 323.
