Lot Essay

The materials from which this striking rendering of Dejima was made are similar to those used in Canton for the manufacture of miniature, fully three-dimensional, landscapes intended for export to the West, of which at least two examples are preserved in the Victoria and Albert Museum. It is even possible that the present Lot might also be of Chinese manufacture, although it is certain that the frame was made in Japan.
