An Unusual Wood and Ivory Okimono [Sculptural Ornament]
Signed Ryuun, Meiji Period (Late 19th Century)
Depicting a sarumawashi [monkey trainer and exhibitor] on a rotten log and using a rope made from copper wire to drag a reluctant monkey from a hole in the log where it crouches with a piece of fruit, the sarumawashi's hat, breeches and feet stained black, his face, hands and stick, as well as the monkey, in carved, incised and stained ivory, signed underneath in carved characters on an ivory plaque Ryuun
