Lot Essay

We are grateful to Professor Andrea de Marchi, who on the basis of photographs, recognised that this panel was originally part of a diptych, with a companion panel, The Adoration of the Magi, in the Museo di Castelvecchio, Verona, which he had previously recognised as a work by Andrea di Pietro ('De lapidibus sententiae', Scritti in Onore di Giovanni Lorenzoni). The artist was the nephew of Altichiero, the major artist working in Padua in the late Trecento.
