ANDREAE, Johannes (c.1270-1348). Super arboribus consanguinitatis, affinitatis et cognationis spiritualis et legalis una cum exemplis et enigmatibus. [Strassburg: Heinrich Knoblochtzer, c.1483].
Chancery 2° (283 x 201mm). Collation: [18 26] (1/1r blank, 1/1v woodcut of a tree of consanguinity, 1/2r-2/2r text, 2/2v-4v full-page woodcut diagrams, 1/5-6 blank). 12 leaves (of 14, without final two blanks). 39 lines. Type: 3:96G, 4:120G. 10 leaves of woodcut 'trees' and diagrams with extensive xylographic text, woodcut Maiblumen and solar initials on first text leaf, strapwork initial on 1/7r. (Small hole in fo, some very light worming just affecting one woodcut and a few letters, one repaired marginal tear.) Early 20th-century dark blue morocco signed Rivière & Son (short split at upper hinge). Provenance: [W.J. Leighton, sale of his stock, Sotheby's, 14 November 1918, lot 28, £3.3 to Bull]; William G. Robinson (bookseller, catalogue description tipped in).
First edition of this version, with additions by an anonymous author, and with 7 additional woodcuts. Andreae's text on the dictates of canonical law regarding kinship and marriage was immensely useful and popular. At least 45 editions were printed in the 15th century. Previous editions were illustrated with 2 or 3 woodcut trees of consanguinity, but for the present edition (Knoblochtzer's second), he added 7 new diagrammatic cuts; somewhat anachronistically, they have extensive xylographic text. H *1021; Goff A-625; GW 1707; Polain(B) 171; Schreiber 3287.
