Lot Essay

Grapes is a maquette for a portfolio of screen prints Warhol executed in 1979. This work gives insight into the artist's working method and how he approaches composition. The use of the multi-layered collage, primarily mylar and construction paper, is representational of the layers of screens that would be used to execute the prints. Looking at Grapes, it is possible to dissect the steps the artist followed in order to achieve the final screenprints.
