This unusual early still life could have been designed as a shop decoration, given the size of the panel, and is clearly influenced by Flemish still lives by artists such as Joachim Beukelaer (c.1530-1573), in whose works the motif of a kitchen maid often appears, as well as Pieter Aertsen (1507-1575).
