The renowned English maker Thomas Cole, son of a clockmaker, was born in Somerset in 1800. He moved to London in the early 1820s and by 1845 was calling himself a 'designer and maker of ornamental clocks' which he exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851. He is rightly renowned for his high quality clocks of individual, distinctive design, namely multi-section and beautifully engraved with scrolls, floral decoration, fancy borders and others. Cole's timepieces were mostly retailed by other makers and retailers (in general high end Victorian London jewellers such as Asprey, Dent and Hancocks).
His fine work was much copied by others, both in his lifetime and for the years following his death in 1864.
