Lot Essay

Five of the fifty-four chapters of the eleventh-century Tale of Genji are illustrated on this screen. They are Chapters 6 (Suetsumuhana The Safflower), 14 (Miozukushi Channel Buoys), 23 (Hatsune The First Warbler), 24 (Kocho Butterflies) and 49 (Yadorigi The Ivy).
