A fascinating evocation of life during the Momoyama-Edo period in the capital city of Kyoto, showing the temples, palaces, shrines, shopping streets and residences of the city. The city is divided into segments by the use of drifting gold clouds decorated with the elaborate use of gofun in matsukawabishi and cloud patterns. On the far right is a man fishing in the gorge of the Hozugawa, a river rising in the mountains of Tamba and flows into the Kyoto basin as the Yodogawa. To the left is a crowd of townspeople watching a horserace, among the crowd are two groups of three Portuguese, which may have been added at a slightly later date. In the two centre panels, Ginkakuji, the Golden Pavilion, and to the left is a large temple and shrine complex. Below is a palace, with people in formal court dress in the house and grounds. On the left-hand panel is Fushimi castle with a polearm rack beside the guardroom.
The Kitayama palace complex was built by Yoshimitsu, the 3rd Muromachi shogun between 1397 and 1407 in the hills of the Kita ward in Kyoto. Having been the centre of Ashikaga power duriing his lifetime, it was converted into a temple after his death and named Rokuonji, Rokuon being Yoshimitsu's posthumous name. Severely damaged during the Onin War of 1467 - 1477, Kinkakuji was the only survivor of the group of buildings following a fire which swept the temple complex in 1565.
