The sitters are Christopher Sykes, the author, and his wife, Camilla. The occasion was a ball given by the Royal Family at Buckingham Palace and the dress was designed for Mrs Sykes by Malcolm Sherrard. There is a larger version of this picture in the collection of Birmingham Art Gallery.
