Lot Essay

The Molo, looking West, relates to Canaletto's composition of circa 1742-1751, which he executed for the Duke of Leeds, though the staffage has been slightly simplified in the present composition (see W.G. Constable, Giovanni Antonio Canal 1697-1768, Oxford, 1962, I, pl. 27, no. 95; II, pp. 221-2, no. 95). The Bacino di San Marco, looking East is closest in composition to Canaletto's view no. 133 in Constable (ibid, I, pl. 31, no. 133; II, p. 239, no. 133), though the viewpoint has been slightly moved to the left.
