ARDASHIR KILLS HAFTVAD AND HIS SON SHAHUY
SAFAVID SHIRAZ, IRAN, CIRCA 1590
From the Shahnama of Firdawsi, gouache heightened with gold on paper, Ardashir, mounted on horseback, watches as Haftvad and Shahuy are flung into a pit of fire and beheaded, behind them numerous people on horseback and on foot look on, with four columns of black nasta'liq above and below, blue floral intercolumnar rules, a heading in white nasta'liq on gold ground beneath the miniature, within gold and polychrome rules, the miniature extending into the gold illuminated margin above, mounted on brown card, some corrosion and flaking of paint
