ARISTOTLE (384-322 B.C.). De natura animalium. –De partibus animalium, and other texts. Translated by Theodorus Gaza (c. 1400-c. 1475). Venice: Aldus Manutius, May 1503-March 1504.
2° (304 x 207mm). Text in Latin and Greek. Aldine device on title and on part title of Problematum. (Title lightly soiled, few small stains, light waterstaining to bottom corner of approximately 20 leaves including title of Problematum.) Modern vellum, gilt title on spine, marbled endpapers and edges (extremities lightly rubbed, light discolouration). Provenance: ink description on front endpaper and few marginal annotations — removed booklabel — Livio Ambrogio (bookplate).
First Aldine edition of this collection of texts in the Latin translation of Theodore Gaza. Aristotle’s three works on animals were the first collection of treatises on biology to be printed, when the first edition appeared at Venice in 1476. They contain 'an immense collection of biological data -- anatomical, physiological, behavioral -- on over five hundred species of animals' (Grolier, Medicine). They are joined here by Theophrastus’ works on plants and Problemata of Aristotle and of Alexander Aphrodisias. Owing to demand for the texts, they were reprinted by the Aldine press in 1513 (see lot 75). Adams A-1761; Ahmanson-Murphy 81; Renouard, 45:2.
