Lot Essay

Manx Queen, 989 tons, was built for the South Eastern Railway by J.& G. Thomson at Greenock in 1881 and originally named Duchess of Edinburgh. After only a few trips on the railway's Folkstone to Boulogne route however, she was withdrawn as unsuitable and laid up at Sheerness pending sale. Purchased by the Barrow Steam Navigation Company in 1882, she was renamed Manx Queen and put into their Isle of Man service where she remained, apart form a brief charter to Belgian State Railways whilst they awaited new tonnage in 1889, until 1907 when she was sold for breaking.
