Lot Essay

ARTHUR WARDLE, R.I., R.B.C. (BRITISH, 1864-1949)

A sporting artist with little formal training, Wardle's sensitive portrayals of his subjects have made him a favourite painter among dog breeders and collectors alike. Painting dogs in specific poses to show their particular breed characteristics, while accurately capturing the personality and expression of the animals, Wardle's works have ensured his position as one of the world's most eminent and collectable dog artists of the twentieth century.
