ARTHUR WELLESLEY, DUKE OF WELLINGTON (1769-1852)
Autograph letter signed ("Wellington") and again on self-folding envelope face, to Major Dickson in Alcacer do Sol, 4, 2 1/4pp., from ?Geneva, 27 February 1812 (browning, hole to final page [not affecting text]).

On hearing that about 18 English troops had been sent to Alcacer do Sol" he pleads: "I beg you to take measures to have these removed to Elvas even though you should have brought up the Russian guns. If they should arrive before you will have received the Russian guns, you wil, of course, have left 10 of the Russians. I think you are in advance of your time; but the equipments etc from Libon are behind." The possible "prevalence of Westerly winds" has slowed communication between Lisbon and ?Setival and will delay his arrival in Elvas until 8th [March] after which he stresses that there should be no further delays.
