On June 7, 1833, Louis-Philippe, King of France ordered another version of the present lot, a portrait of his second daughter Marie, Princess of Orléans (1813-1839) with the Dutch painter Ary Scheffer.
The present lot shows Marie in her favorite pose as an artist.
More versions of the portrait in question are known. Scheffer used to produce one or more, mostly smaller, replicas of his royal portraits, either for other members of the dynasty, for himself, for friends or for admirors of the princess. An example can be found in the collection Count Würtemberg, Althausen, Germany.
