Higuchi Ichiyo (1872-1896) is the first major woman writer in modern Japan. In a brief life of illness and poverty she was spectacularly productive, writing over 4,000 poems, 21 short stories and two novels. Her work is set in the slums and red-light districts of Tokyo, where she lived.
