The attribution was first suggested by S. Nystad in 1975, proposing a date of execution of circa 1610/9.
As pointed out in Vastenavond - Carnaval: feesten van de omgekeerde wereld, ed. Ch. de Mooij, 1992, p.80 & 91, the revellers and jesters in the foreground carry the attributes of Carnival, such as the wooden spoon, the gridiron and other kitchen utensils.
The present lot may have been intended as February in a series of the months of the year.
