The Wiltshire was built by Barclay, Curle & Co. at Glasgow in 1869 for G. Marshall & Sons of London. A large vessel, she was registered at 1,530 tons gross (1,461 net), and measured 239½ feet in length with a 38 foot beam. Trading to both India and Australia, she was sold to Trinder, Anderson & Co. of London in the late 1880s who renamed her Gwalla and re-rigged her as a barque. In 1902 she was sold again, this time to Italian owners, who renamed her Gesine and registered her in Naples where she spent her remaining years.
