This Allegory of Avarice relates to the picture, dated 1642, in the Gemäldegalerie, Kassel; a work attributed to the little-known Flemish painter, Jacques de l'Ange, that forms part of a series representing The Seven Deadly Sins. A set of the same subjects, also attributed to the artist but painted on copper and on a smaller scale (36 x 28 cm.), are in the Ashmolean Museum of Art, Oxford (see C. Casley, C. Harrison & J. Whiteley eds., The Ashmolean Museum: complete illustrated catalogue of paintings, Oxford, 2004, p. 58, no. A26).
