Lot Essay

We are grateful to Alastair Laing (private communication) for suggesting a possible attribution to Jean-Baptiste Martin fils and identifying the subject as King Louis XV after his first mounting on a horse at the royal Château de La Muette on 8 May 1720. Another version of this composition, formerly in the collection of Paul Mellon, was sold at Sotheby's London, 18 November 1981, lot 66, where attributed to Johann Georg Hamilton.
