An old handwritten label on the reverse of the canvas identifies this portrait as 'Thomas Coward, captain in the Regiment of the Buffs, painted by Opie'. Thomas Coward is not identified in the army lists and is therefore likely to have been in one of the many volunteer regiments established in the latter decades of the eighteenth century.
