Lot Essay

Drawn after the painting by Joseph's father Salomon de Bray formerly in the collection of Henri Marcus, Nancy (J.W. von Moltke. 'Salomon de Bray', Marburger Jahrbuch für Kunstwissenschaft, 11-12, 1938-39, pp. 309-420). Further drawings by Joseph after Salomon are illustrated in J. Giltaij and F. Lammertse, 'Maintaining a studio archive: drawn copies by the de Braij family' Master Drawings, 2001, pp. 367-384. The attribution to Joseph de Braij was suggested to the previous owner by Friso Lammertse.
