Provenance
Count Ivan Ivanowitsch Schuvalov (1727-1797), by 1756, when shown in a picture of the Cabinet of Ivanowitsch Schulaow by Fjodo Stepanovic Rokatov (now destroyed but known in a copy in the Historical Museum, Moscow).
Given by the Soviet State to the composer Isaak Dunajewski (1900-1955), in 1945, and by descent to his son Evgeni Dunajewski by whom sold in 1994.

Lot Essay

An attribution to the young Luca Giordano has been proposed by Professor Nicola Spinosa in a letter dated 2004. He dates the picture to 1660-5 when Giordano was working under the influence of Jusepe de Ribera.
