The features of the young woman are comparable with those in other portraits by Luigi Crespi, including the Portrait of a member of the Bargellini family, in the Museo Davia Bargellini, Bologna. A further example was sold at Sotheby's, London, 4 April 1984, lot 217.
Son of the painter Giuseppe Maria Crespi, Luigi was a writer, art critic, dealer and painter, whose portraits, although occasionally confused with his father's, were painted in a more fashionable style. As an art dealer, his most important client was Augustus III, King of Saxony and Poland for whom he secured Francesco del Cossa's Annunciation of 1473, now in the Gemäldegalerie, Dresden.
