Lot Essay

Although working principally in the New York and Connecticut area in the early years of the 19th century, Nathaniel Wales had, by 1815, moved to Charleston, South Carolina, where he continued painting portraits. According to tradition, the portrait offered here was found in a Southern home, mounted within the architectural framework of the house, in the manner of overmantel paintings. The attribution to Nathaniel Wales was made subsequently by Mary Black.
