This would seem to be a study, with small changes, for two pictures with the same composition: Les Arts, 1910, no. 106, exhibited in Brussels in 1910, no. 513 bis, sold at Van Tilt, Brussels, 29 April 1935, lot 87; the second version was sold at O. Messinger, Munich, 16 April 1918.
Paul de Vos, working in a style similar to his brother-in-law and master Frans Snyders, specialized in still lifes and hunting scenes. These subjects were highly appreciated by the nobility, who eagerly collected his paintings. De Vos occasionally collaborated with Rubens, painting the animals in his large hunting scenes.
