Lot Essay

The composition was a type devised by Pieter Neefs I and repeated with minor differences in a number of versions by himself and his son. The architecture is imaginary, although loosely based on that of Antwerp cathedral; other examples include the pictures sold in these Rooms, 26 October 1984, lot 54; and 16 December 1998, lot 115. The figures in the present work, which are clearly by another hand, are close to Frans Francken II.
