Lot Essay

The present work appears to be a later 17th-century copy after the original by van Dyck in a private collection (see S. Barnes, et al., Van Dyck: A Complete Catalogue of the Paintings, New Haven, 2004, pp. 536-37, no. IV. 138). The sitter is thought to be Elizabeth Howard, a Maid of Honour to Queen Henrietta Maria, granddaughter of Thomas Howard, 1st Earl of Suffolk and possibly daughter of Sir Charles Howard. Lely is known to have copied a number of works by van Dyck.
